Pulp mill UPM Uruguay with container system

Bosman Van Zaal realises the cultivation system for the new eucalyptus pulp mill nursery of UPM Uruguay, a world supplier of speciality and communication papers, and more.

UPM and a future beyond fossils

UPM is one of the world's leading producers of northern softwood, birch and eucalyptus pulp. They deliver renewable and responsible solutions and innovate for a future beyond fossils across six business areas: biorefining, energy, raflatac, speciality papers, communication papers, and plywood. UPM has made an investment decision to construct a 2,1 million tonne greenfield eucalyptus pulp mill near Paso de los Toros in central Uruguay. Bosman Van Zaal realises the cultivation system for the new eucalyptus nursery.

Mobile container system for automated cultivation

The Bosman Van Zaal cultivation system for the new eucalyptus nursery of UPM Uruguay consists of an N3 mobile container system for the propagation of the plants in Sarandi, with which the headhouse and rooting area are completely automated. The container system is turnkey and includes about 5000 aluminium rolling containers for the 56,000 m2 of cultivation space divided among various departments. For transport to and from the departments, a semi-automatic system consisting of drives in lifting racks, roller conveyors and an overhead system will be supplied. The system will also include a disinfection unit and all necessary electrical systems and software.

UPM Uruguay investment and development

Besides the mill, the total investment of USD 3 billion also includes a pulp terminal in the port of Montevideo as well as investments in local facilities in Paso de los Toros. In November 2017, UPM and the previous Government of Uruguay signed an investment agreement. It will significantly boost the economy and regional development. The completion of the total project is planned for 2022. In Q1 of next year, the first containers with young plants will run on the system.

Partners in this project include Flier Systems, Agrikol and BCC.
