Farming where food is bought
REWE Green Farming rethinks what a supermarket can be. Its 2,760 m² glass rooftop farm transforms previously unused roof space into a productive growing environment for fresh lettuce. Rather than placing food production far outside the city, this project brings cultivation closer to consumers and makes it a visible part of the retail experience.
The concept brings growing, retail and distribution together in one location. It demonstrates how urban space can contribute to a more local food supply while creating a direct connection between crop production and consumer demand.
Cultivation Systems at the core
Bosman Van Zaal delivered the Cultivation Systems that support the controlled production of lettuce in this distinctive rooftop environment. In a project where reliable cultivation takes place above a busy supermarket, every element must contribute to a structured, repeatable and efficient growing process.
The systems form a key part of the automated hydroponic operation, helping to create the consistent conditions needed for high-quality lettuce production. By integrating cultivation technology into the wider concept from the beginning, the rooftop farm is equipped to support reliable day-to-day operations and continuous production throughout the year.
Fresh product, shorter journey
Once harvested, the lettuce is processed and packed in the supermarket below. It can then be sold directly on site or prepared for distribution through REWE’s regional network. At full capacity, the rooftop farm can produce up to 900,000 fresh salad mixes each year.
By combining rooftop cultivation with rainwater use, waste-heat recovery and existing retail logistics, REWE Green Farming Berlin shows how food production can become an integrated part of the city. It is more than a supermarket with a rooftop farm—it is a scalable model for bringing fresh, locally grown produce closer to the people who buy it.
