A future-proof greenhouse complex combining botanical research, plant collections and modern horticultural technology
Utrecht University is taking an important step towards the future of botanical research and plant conservation with the development of a new greenhouse complex at its Botanical Gardens. The new facilities will replace the outdated greenhouses, providing a modern and sustainable environment for research, education and the university's extensive botanical collection.
Bosman van Zaal, together with Deforce Construct and construction company Van Zoelen, is part of the team responsible for bringing this ambitious project to life.
Bringing research and horticulture together
The new greenhouse complex is designed to bring plant collections, scientific research and cultivation facilities together under one roof. With approximately 7,300 m² of greenhouse space, the facility will offer a wide range of environments to support different plant species and research activities.
The research facilities will include 12 greenhouse compartments and three laboratory spaces, housing a total of 36 Ecotrons. These advanced research environments will enable scientists to study plant responses under carefully controlled conditions. In addition, dedicated cultivation areas will support the propagation of plants for research, education and the Botanical Gardens.
The complex will also feature six climate-controlled greenhouse compartments accessible to visitors, offering an opportunity to experience the botanical collection up close.
Designed for optimal growing conditions
A key element of the project is the integration of modern greenhouse technology to create stable and precisely controlled growing environments. Different climate zones will accommodate the needs of a diverse range of plant species, including tropical plants and larger trees.
The research greenhouses will feature computer-controlled screens to regulate sunlight and heat, allowing growing conditions to be adjusted to the specific requirements of the plants. The tropical greenhouse will feature double glazing to improve insulation and maintain suitable temperatures throughout the year.
The building has also been carefully designed to complement its unique surroundings at Fort Hoofddijk. Its architecture takes into account the historic landscape, combining functional greenhouse design with a restrained appearance that respects the character of the Botanical Gardens.
